Halloween Decorations 1

Middletown goes all out for Halloween! These scarecrows are attached to posts along several blocks of Main Street and are part of a town competition.

Update: Awards would have been presented at Movie Night in Middletown Park tonight, but that event was cancelled because of all day rainy weather. If you happen to live in the area, click here for more details.

I'll post more pictures of these characters during the coming week.

This is either an extreme example of extended outdoor living space or a sidewalk sale with free merchandise.

House Theme - Day Three

No politics today .. just more beautiful houses on Main Street.

This is a closer view of the center house.

House Theme - Day Two

... and continuing with the theme started yesterday, here is the Obama house.

Regardless of which candidate you favor, remember to exercise your right to vote on November 4th.

House Theme - Day One

There are many beautiful homes on Main Street in Middletown. For the next few days I'll post pictures of some of them.

The idea came from a comment made on a recent post of McCain and Obama yard sign photographs. I believe it was made by a resident of one of the houses, but I don't know which. I promised I'd post pictures of both, so starting alphabetically, today's is the McCain house; tomorrow I'll post the Obama house.

A Different Steeple

Since starting this blog, I have posted many photographs of the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church steeple. A member of the Christ Reformed Church whom I met recently pointed this out and suggested, in a friendly way, that there are other churches in town too. He is right. Mt. Zion is a major feature of the Middletown skyline, but Christ Reformed Church is less than a block away and sits on a property at least as large as Mt. Zion.

Both churches played important non-religious roles in the days after the Civil War Battle of Antietam. This sign explains some of that.

By the way, you can click on any photo on this site for a larger view.

Empty Main Street

You don't see Main Street like this very often. It was closed for several blocks during the Middletown Heritage Festival.

Sky Watch Friday: Half Moon Over Middletown

OK, I'll try this Skywatch Friday thing for awhile. I've had an idea for some time now of a photo with the moon and a recognizable structure in Middletown. There was a half moon this week, and the weather cooperated.

This is my first digital attempt at capturing the night sky. I should have used a tripod, but it was in the car a block away. Next time.

IH

If you've heard country singer Craig Morgan's latest hit song or if you live in farm country, you know about International Harvester. This tractor was parked on the street at the recent Middletown Heritage Festival.

Politics

Maryland usually votes Democratic, but western Frederick County is usually conservative Republican. So I wasn't expecting to see these lawn signs in the same block on Main Street. On the other hand, it shouldn't surprise me at all. The most predictable thing about the upcoming election is its unpredictability. And the great thing is that no matter which way we vote or who wins, we will continue to have a great country!

Cloud Bank

I don't usually participate in Sky Watch Friday, but if I did, this would be my post this week.

Theme Day: Lines

The theme this month is "lines." Everywhere you look in Middletown, there are power lines. They are unsightly yet the add character. So here is my lines shot.
