The photo makes the snake look huge, but it's length is probably 18 inches(45 cm)at most. I think it was more afraid of me than I was of it. A few years ago we had a 5 foot long black snake in the yard. THAT one freaked me out.

We don't have many snakes in the UK so are always a bit wary of them.
